Yesterday, Alex Kirk (photo below as he gives his talk), graduate student in clinical psychology, won the People's Choice Award at the first ever 3MT (3 minute thesis) competition sponsored by the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools at their annual meeting in San Antonio. The rules of 3MT are rigorous: one static powerpoint slide, 3 minutes in which to explain to a general audience what your research focuses on and why the public should care about it. Alex's research on suicide prevention among teenagers was both compelling and sobering. The judges included the mayor of San Marcos, a retired CEO, a communications professional, and a couple of educators.
Alex won the Appalachian 3MR competition in December. He is a GRAM student, and he has been invited to give his talk to the Appalachian Board of Trustees and the UNC Board of Governors. His mentor is Kurt Michael.
