BOONE, N.C. — Small trickles of water traveling through Alaska’s permafrost — subsurface soil that remains frozen throughout the year — carry clues that could unlock a greater understanding of climate change and its advancement.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees in fields within NSF's mission.
Nataly Jimenez, from High Point, is an Appalachian State University Honors College senior majoring in sociology-criminology, deviance and law, with a minor in psychology. After graduation, she plans to attend law school and become an immigration lawyer.

Dr. Maggie Sugg, assistant professor in the Department of Geography and Planning at Appalachian State University, has earned a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). She is only the second App State faculty to be so honored.
Dr. Baker Perry, professor in Appalachian State University's Department of Geography and Planning, is recognized as one of the world's top experts in high altitude precipitation and climate change.
When Tatum Schwartz arrived at Appalachian State University she did not anticipate launching a clothing drive for migrant families or assisting in a research study on the lingering impacts of a global pandemic — two of her most meaningful experiences as a sociology major, she said.
