Undergraduate Exercise Science Students Receive Recognition

Kojo Thompson, a senior Clinical Exercise Science major at Appalachian State won the Undergraduate Best Research Presentation award at the South East Region American College of Sports Medicine Conference in Greenville, SC on February 16th. Kojo's original research presentation entitled "The effects of exercise and supplementation on avascular necrosis; a case study" was selected following a competition that pared down over 100 submissions to a final 8. The presentation was judged by independent scientists from various institutions. Kojo completed the work with his mentor Dr. Scott Collier and classmate Ethan Durland in the Vascular Biology and Autonomic Studies Laboratory at the Institute for Health and Human Service. The lab also had a presentation by Misty Parsons entitled "Sex Differences Following Four Weeks of Discontinuous versus Continuous Exercise in Central Pulse Wave Velocity" that was scored in the final 8. Kojo won $300 for his best-of-meeting presentation. Both finalists were funded by the Office of Student Research for their research and travel.
