Reed Gurchiek, a graduate student in Exercise Science, was selected as recipient of the 2016 American College of Sports Medicine - Biomechanics Interest Group Student Research Award. This award recognizes exemplar achievements by promising young scientists in the field of biomechanics. Reed, along with his advisor, Dr. Herman van Werkhoven, researched the feasibility of using smartphone sensors to track impact loading during physical activity. The use of smartphone sensors to track impact is a potential cost-effective means to ensure forces experience by the body remains at optimal levels during physical activity. Reed presented his research poster at the annual ACSM conference held in Boston this summer. This research was funded by a University Research Council grant.
